How period delay works

Period delay treatment usually uses a tablet called norethisterone. Taken a few days before your period is due and continued through the time you want to skip it, it keeps your body’s hormone levels steady so your period holds off. Once you stop the tablets, your period normally arrives within a few days.

What to expect

  • A short, private consultation to check it’s safe for you.
  • A few questions about your health, medicines, and any history of blood clots.
  • Where suitable, a short course of tablets with clear instructions on when to start and stop.
  • Honest advice if it’s not the right choice for you.

Plan a little ahead

You’ll usually need to start the tablets around three days before your period is due, so it’s best to come in a week or so before you need cover. Leaving it late? Ask us anyway — we’ll do what we can.

Is it right for me?

Period delay is safe for many people but not everyone. A history of blood clots, certain medical conditions, and some medicines can make it unsuitable — which is exactly what the consultation checks. If it’s not right for you, we’ll explain why.
