NHS Pharmacy First in Southport — free treatment for 7 conditions
Under NHS Pharmacy First, St Marks Pharmacy can treat 7 common conditions completely free — no GP appointment, no referral, no waiting weeks. Walk in to 42 Derby Road any time.
What is NHS Pharmacy First?
NHS Pharmacy First is a scheme that lets your local pharmacy treat 7 common conditions for free — without you needing to see a GP. It was launched in 2024 to take pressure off GP surgeries and get patients treated faster.
If you have one of the 7 conditions below, come straight to St Marks Pharmacy on Derby Road. Our pharmacist will assess you, and if appropriate, prescribe the right treatment on the spot. In many cases you’ll be seen faster than you’d wait for a GP callback.
Been referred by NHS 111? Just come in — no need to call ahead.
How would you like to be seen?
Both options are free on the NHS. Walk-in is available any time. Booking ahead means less waiting.
The 7 conditions we treat under Pharmacy First
Click any condition to see symptoms, treatment, and red flags. All consultations are private and confidential.
Earache
Ear pain in children is usually caused by an ear infection. We can assess and prescribe antibiotic ear drops or oral antibiotics on the spot.
Sore throat
Our pharmacist uses a clinical scoring tool to decide whether antibiotics are needed. Many sore throats clear without them — we’ll advise clearly.
Sinusitis
Blocked nose, facial pressure, and headache? We can assess whether your sinusitis needs antibiotics or nasal sprays and pain relief.
UTI & cystitis
Burning when you urinate? We can prescribe antibiotics for uncomplicated UTIs in women aged 16–64. Private consultation — no GP needed.
Shingles
Shingles antivirals work best if started within 72 hours of the rash appearing. Don’t wait for a GP appointment — come in now.
Impetigo
A contagious skin infection causing golden-crusted sores, usually around the mouth or nose. We can prescribe antibiotic cream or tablets.
Infected insect bites
A bite that’s becoming increasingly hot, swollen, or painful may be infected. We can assess it and prescribe antibiotics if needed.
